My first theatre design work was in 1988 for Soapbox Theatre Company – a TIE company based in Stratford, East London. I hadn’t studied Theatre but had a long standing interest in performance having written my BA thesis at Loughborough College of Art on Performance Art and having also worked Front of House for the RSC at the Barbican, which greatly broadened my experience and understanding of Theatre.

I worked with Soapbox for the next 4 years, designing and stage managing all their shows. When the company lost its funding I went freelance and found I was more in demand as a Stage Manger than a designer, so continued to make art work but also had several years of touring small productions around the country. I moved up a rung to Production Management and gained enough experience to be hired as a lighting designer on various productions. For the past 16 years I have been Production Manager for Greenwich & Lewisham Young People’s Theatre – recently rebranded as Tramshed Arts – a role which has included all aspects of Stage and Technical Management including designing and making sets, props and costumes. And since 2009, when we moved into the Tramshed in Woolwich, I have also encompassed various aspects of Building Management.
